
Why your bathroom heater actually works
Ever tried using a standard space heater in a drafty changing room? It’s a waste of time. Those things try to warm up the air, but in a room with a breeze, that warm air just vanishes before it ever hits you. We do things differently. Instead of fighting the air, we use short-wave infrared (IR) emitters. Think of it like the sun. The heat doesn’t travel through the air; it goes straight to your skin and the surfaces around you. That’s why the second you flip the switch, you actually feel it. No waiting around.
The secret to that instant heat
We use high-wattage quartz halogen tubes for a reason. The halogen cycle lets the filament get incredibly hot without melting the glass. When these are hooked up to a 220V-240V circuit, they hit operating temperature in a fraction of a second. You get this concentrated beam of energy that just works. It doesn’t matter if the room is freezing or mildly chilly—the heat you feel stays exactly the same.
The nitty-gritty stuff
The quartz envelope is the heart of the system. It lets the IR spectrum pass through without soaking up the heat. Sometimes we add a gold coating to dial back the glare, which shifts the heat to a longer wave. For the connectors, we don’t mess around with cheap solder. We use R7s or similar heavy-duty snap-in bases. They can handle the constant expanding and contracting as the unit heats up and cools down without snapping. One thing to keep in mind: these pull a lot of power. If you’re putting in a bank of four 600W lamps, make sure your wiring and breakers can handle the load. You don’t want to trip the power the moment someone wants to get warm.
The reality check
These units give you that high-end, five-star hotel feeling, but they aren’t meant to replace your whole HVAC system. They’re zonal heaters. Since the heat travels in a straight line, you have to put them exactly where people are standing. If something blocks the lamp, the heat stops. It’s a trade-off. You lose that “wrap-around” feeling of a forced-air heater, but in exchange, you get warmth the very instant you need it.
