
How to Keep Your Bathroom Infrared Heater from Becoming a Hazard
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. You’ve got high humidity and splashing water mixing with high-voltage electricity. Not a great combo. To make sure everything stays safe, we put almost all our focus on where the power hits the heating element.
Dealing with the Damp
Here’s the thing: water vapor gets into everything. Standard housings just aren’t enough. We use a Recessed design to keep the electrical guts far away from the “splash zone.” Inside, there’s a shortwave quartz lamp. These things get incredibly hot—which is actually a win, because that heat keeps the area around the lamp bone-dry. But the terminals? Those are the danger zone. To stop moisture from jumping the gap between a live wire and the metal frame, we use sealed ceramic holders and high-temp silicone gaskets. It’s all about creating a barrier that water simply can’t cross.
Grounding and Safety Nets
You can’t just trust a plastic box to keep you safe. We use double-insulated wiring that can handle a lot of stress without leaking current. And the frame itself has to be bonded directly to the house grounding system. Plus, we always plug these into a circuit with an RCD or a Leakage Current Trip. Why? Because if a seal ever fails and water hits a live wire, the power kills itself in a few milliseconds. It’s that “better safe than sorry” approach.
The Heat Struggle
Those high-wattage lamps put out some serious heat. It’s great for clearing out the steam, but it’s brutal on the materials. If you use cheap PVC wiring, the heat will literally bake the plastic until it cracks. Then you’ve got a short circuit on your hands. To avoid that, we use PTFE or fiberglass-braided leads. They can take a beating from the heat and they don’t degrade. One last tip: give these units their own dedicated circuit. If you try to cram a 2000W heater onto a shared bathroom line, you’re going to be tripping breakers all day. Just make sure your wiring gauge is beefy enough for a continuous load so you aren’t accidentally heating up the inside of your walls.
