
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (And Dry)
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble. You’ve got constant steam, random splashes, and high humidity. If your insulation isn’t spot on, you’re looking at a ground fault—and nobody wants that while they’re stepping out of the shower. To keep things safe, we really have to obsess over two spots: the lamp envelope and where the wires actually connect.
Dealing with the Damp
Standard quartz tubes just can’t handle it when the air is basically liquid. That’s where “tracking” happens. Basically, moisture creates a little bridge for electricity to jump where it shouldn’t, and then—pop—you’ve got a short. To stop that, we use reinforced glass and special coatings. But the real secret is the housing. You want a high IP rating here. We also make sure the electrical path is totally cut off from the chassis. I use ceramic insulators and high-temp silicone gaskets at every single entry point. And a quick tip: if you’re wiring these into a ceiling, make sure that junction box is airtight. Even a tiny leak can fry the lamp or trip your RCD in seconds.
The Connection Point (The Weak Link)
Here’s the thing: the connection point is almost always where things go wrong. Whether you’re using R7s or custom leads, moisture loves to settle right on the terminals. If you use cheap materials, they oxidize. That creates resistance, which creates heat, which eventually melts your socket. Not great. That’s why we stick to corrosion-resistant alloys. You also have to match your wiring to the wattage. A 250W lamp is a different beast than a 1000W unit. More current means more heat at the joint. To lock it all down, I always use heat-shrink tubing with adhesive linings to seal the joint completely.
The Trade-off
There is a catch, though. When you wrap a lamp in a heavy-duty waterproof casing, you lose some of that wide heat spread. The beam gets narrower. It’s safer, sure, but you’ll have to be a bit more strategic about where you place the lamps to make sure the room actually feels warm. One last thing. Check your grounding. Often. In a wet room, a loose ground wire turns the whole heater frame into a live conductor. And that’s a mistake you only make once.
