Most bathroom heat lamps use short-wave infrared to get you warm the second you flip the switch. But there’s a catch: the light. Standard halogen tubes give off this harsh, blinding glare. It’s a pain for anyone, but it’s actually a real concern for babies whose eyes are still developing. We figured out a way to fix that by tweaking how the light actually works.
The Secret is in the Coating
We didn’t want to sacrifice the heat just to get rid of the glare. So, we started using specialized quartz tubes with a built-in filter. Instead of a basic clear tube, we added a thin-film coating. It basically acts as a gatekeeper—it blocks the high-energy visible light but lets the warmth (the medium and long-wave infrared) slide right through. The result? You still get that cozy, instant heat, but the light is just a soft, gentle glow. We also use high-purity quartz. Why? Because these things take a beating. Going from freezing cold to 250°C in a few seconds is a lot of stress on the glass, and we don’t want it cracking on you.
Keeping it Safe and Steady
We spent a lot of time balancing how much heat you feel versus how much light you see. By tweaking the tungsten filament and the gas pressure inside the tube, we kept the heat high but the “color” of the light low. One quick tip for the install: make sure your wiring can handle the “inrush current.” These lamps pull a big spike of power the moment they turn on. If your relays aren’t built for that peak, you’re going to burn out your contacts. It’s a small detail, but it saves you a huge headache later.
The Trade-off
Now, full disclosure: filtering the light does mean we lose a tiny bit of efficiency. A small percentage of the energy gets soaked up by the coating. But honestly? In a home bathroom, that doesn’t really matter. We aren’t trying to heat an industrial warehouse. We just want you to be warm without feeling like you’re staring into the sun.
